What Is A Mi-Ki?
Pronounced (me-key)
Fun Facts
- A dog that acts like a cat in so many ways; always finds that sunny spot to sit in, can hold a ball between front paws while laying on their back, can sit for hours watching out the window, extremely agile with an amazing ability to jump and some can even climb.
- Favorite place to watch TV is from the back of the couch with their head resting on your shoulder.
- The only dog I know who can flick their tongue up your nose so fast you dont know what hit you. The only dog I know who does such a bizarre thing period!
- Loves to sit up on your shoulder or drape themselves over your shoulder when carried around.
- A dog who delights in showing their love and grooming their human by wanting to clean your ears with their tongue.
- A dog you can not walk down the street without being stopped by almost everyone you pass. You will have told people what a Mi-Ki is a thousand times over the years you spend with this precious rare dog.
- A dog who will make you laugh and feel loved 24 hrs a day!
Breed Facts
- Rare toy breed selectively bred for calm companionship along with sweet engaging personalities
- Breed was started in the USA in the late 1980s and share common ancestors with the Papillon, Maltese and Japanese Chin
- Weight can range from 3 to 10 pounds, the average adult weighs 6 - 7 pounds
- Excellent therapy dogs calm and adorable
- Great companion dogs - happy, loving, sweet and funny
- Excellent health in the pure bred lines - known health issues include patellar luxation, distichia, cryptorchidism
- High intelligence level - very easy to train
- Low activity level - require little exercise, happy in condos and apartments but love to be walked and to run in the open
- Will use a litter box, piddle pads or trained to go outside as you desire
- Hypoallergenic non-shedding breed with hair instead of fur - many people who are allergic to dog hair or dander experience no allergic reaction around Mi-Ki
- Love kids, cats and dogs large or small - easy going gentle personalities allow this dog to be a part of almost any home
- Bi-colored, tri-colored and solids, but solids are rare and prized
- Colors include cream, red, silver, black, white, blue, apricot, sable, gold, brown, beige, chocolate, grizzle, brindle, fawn, mahogany
- Two coat types - long and smooth (smooth coats do not have beard and mustache, body hair is shorter and requires almost no grooming)
- Two coat texture types - Silky lies close to the body, requires little grooming, Cotton has a puffy fuller look, mates easier and requires more grooming than the silky coat but is still easy to maintain with a weekly brushing
- Live into their teens
- Recognized by the States Kennel Club, International All Breed Canine Association, and National Canine Association
- Registry for pure bred Mi-Ki - American Mi-Ki Registry Association
For details on Mi-Ki breed standards, go to the American Mi-Ki Registry Association.

IMPORTANT: DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU VACCINATE!
Vaccinosis is the term used for "reactions our pets have to being vaccinated". It is far more common than we are lead to believe. All 27 veterinary schools in North America are in the process of changing their protocols for vaccinating dogs and cats. Attached is the vaccination schedule by Dr Jean Dodds one of the premier researchers on vaccinosis.
Dr. Jean Dodds' Recommended Vaccination Schedule
|
Vaccine |
Initial |
1st Annual Booster |
Re-Administration Interval |
Comments |
|
Distemper (MLV) (e.g. Intervet Progard Puppy) |
9 weeks 12 weeks 16 - 20 weeks |
At 1 year MLV Distemper/ Parvovirus only |
None needed. Duration of immunity 7.5 / 15 years by studies. Probably lifetime. Longer studies pending. |
Can have numerous side effects if given too young (< 8 weeks). |
|
Parvovirus (MLV) (e.g. Intervet Progard Puppy) |
9 weeks 12 weeks 16 - 20 weeks |
At 1 year MLV Distemper/ Parvovirus only |
None needed. Duration of immunity 7.5 years by studies. Probably lifetime. Longer studies pending. |
At 6 weeks of age, only 30% of puppies are protected but 100% are exposed to the virus at the vet clinic. |
|
Rabies (killed)
See below |
24 weeks or older |
At 1 year (give 3-4 weeks apart from Dist/Parvo booster) Killed 3 year rabies vaccine |
3 yr. vaccine given as required by law in California (follow your state/provincial requirements) |
rabid animals may infect dogs. |
Vaccines Not Recommended For Dogs
|
Distemper & Parvo @ 6 weeks or younger |
Not recommended. At this age, maternal antibodies form the mothers milk (colostrum) will neutralize the vaccine and only 30% for puppies will be protected. 100% will be exposed to the virus at the vet clinic. |
|
Corona |
Not recommended. 1.) Disease only affects dogs <6 weeks of age. 2.) Rare disease: TAMU has seen only one case in seven years. 3.) Mild self-limiting disease. 4.) Efficacy of the vaccine is questionable. |
|
Leptospirosis |
*Importantplease read updated information below
Not recommended 1) There are an average of 12 cases reported annually in California. 2) Side effects common. 3) Most commonly used vaccine contains the wrong serovars.
(There is no cross-protection of serovars) There is a new
vaccine with 2 new serovars. Two vaccinations twice per year
would be required for protection.). 4) Risk outweighs benefits.
Read updated information below |
|
Lyme |
Not recommended 1) Low risk in California. 2) 85% of cases are in 9 New England states and Wisconsin. 3) Possible side effect of polyarthritis from whole cell bacterin.
Please check with your Vet if you are located in a high risk area. |
|
Boretella (Intranasal) (killed) |
Only recommended 3 days prior to boarding when required. Protects against 2 of the possible 8 causes of kennel cough. Duration of immunity 6 months. |
|
Giardia |
Not recommended Efficacy of vaccine unsubstantiated by independent studies |
- Rabies for Puppies - Do not give Rabies shot at the same time as last set of puppy shots.
Wait until puppy is six months old.
- Rabies for Adults - Use only killed 3 year rabies vaccine for adults and give it separated from
other vaccines by 3-4 weeks.
- Leptospirosis - Todays Leptospirosis vaccine is less likely to cause anaphylactic reactions because it is made from only the antigen part of the bacteria, rather than the whole organism. The vaccine used now protects against 4 serovars, although approximately 120 serovars have been identified. Cross immunity does not occur between serovars.
Leptospirosis likes warm, wet climates, and tends to spread when flooding occurs. Leptospirosis
causes death in about 10% of the cases, usually within 5-10 days after initial onset of the disease.

If your animal experiences any of the following symptoms after vaccination, you should contact your veterinary care provider immediately: fever, vomiting, diarrhea, uncontrollable trembling, lack of coordination, seizures or a hard lump at the vaccination site which doesn’t disappear after a couple of weeks.
Multiple components in vaccines compete with each other for the immune system and result in lesser immunity for each individual disease as well as increasing the risk of a reaction.
When an adequate immune memory has already been established, there is little reason to introduce unnecessary antigen, adjuvant, and preservatives by administering booster vaccines. By titering annually, one can assess whether a given animal's humoral immune response has fallen below levels of adequate immune memory. In that event, an appropriate vaccine booster can be administered.

Puppy to Adult Weight Conversion Chart
Predicting a puppy's adult size and weight is not an exact science.
This chart provides a helpful guideline for predicting future weight.
Example: If your 6 week old puppy weighs 20 oz., it's projected adult weight would be 4.5 lbs.
Click here if you would like to see the full conversion chart from birth to 26 weeks.
I did not find it an accurate reflection of adult Mi-Ki weight until about the 3 week point and most accurate at the 8 week point.
